Throughout WWII, the Pz.Kpfw.IV was the main battle tank for the German Army, and its Ausf.G was the first variant (produced from March 1942 and June 1943), which utilized a long-barreled gun. It was in service at the Eastern Front, and it countered overpowering Russian tanks such as the T-34 and KV-1.
